Star Citizen Blasts Through $1 Billion in Player Funding with New $5,000 Spaceship Star Citizen has officially surpassed $1 billion in player funding, with the game's developer Cloud Imperium Games listing a new $5,000 spaceship for sale that is not yet ready to play, highlighting the game's ongoing funding model and leaving many to wonder when the game will be finished.
The milestone was reached during the game's annual DefenseCon event, where players can test out all of the game's spaceships for free, resulting in a sudden spike in funding over the last few days. This makes Star Citizen one of only two games known to have surpassed $1 billion in funding, with the other being Monopoly Go, although most of that budget was spent on marketing. There are also several games rumored to have budgets over $1 billion, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Grand Theft Auto 6, and it's likely that Fortnite has also reached this milestone given its numerous brand crossovers.
The game's latest spaceship, the Anvil Odin, helps explain how Star Citizen has raised so much money. The Anvil Odin is a 762-meter-long Battlecruiser armed with 20 vertical launch missiles, 15 manned turrets, 8 remote turrets, 42 point-defence turrets, and one massive laser beam. It also has its own hangar for docking smaller ships, as well as a canteen, hospital, and in-built tram system. The ship is being offered for $5,000, but it's not yet ready to play and is only available to players who are accepted into the Odin Founders Club. To qualify for buying the ship, prospective purchasers must first write an application explaining why they should be allowed to join the club.
Once accepted, players will receive a "loaner vehicle" - the Aegis Idris-P - until the Anvil Odin is ready to play. This funding model has been a subject of controversy, with some accusing the game of being a scam. However, Star Citizen has been playable for years, and its single-player component, Squadron 42, is theoretically due to launch in 2026, although the release window is uncertain. The game itself has a vaguely suggested endpoint of 2028, but it's possible that it will become one of those forever games that just keeps getting added to.
The fact that players are willing to pay huge sums of money for a ship that is not yet ready to play is a testament to the game's dedicated community and the promise of what the game could become. However, it also raises questions about the game's development timeline and whether it will ever be considered "finished." With no real reason for Cloud Imperium Games to put a finish date on the game as long as players keep throwing money at it, it's possible that Star Citizen will continue to evolve and expand indefinitely.
As the game continues to break funding records and push the boundaries of what is possible in a video game, it's clear that Star Citizen is a unique and ambitious project that has captured the imagination of players around the world. Whether or not it will ultimately deliver on its promises remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - Star Citizen has already made history as one of the most successful crowdfunded games of all time. With its dedicated community and ongoing funding model, it's likely that Star Citizen will continue to be a major player in the gaming industry for years to come.
